Columbus, Cincinnati & Indianapolis Top List of Emerging Hubs for Researchers

CBRE's U.S. Life Sciences Research Talent 2023 report has identified the top nine emerging markets for researchers in the country, with Columbus, Cincinnati, and Indianapolis taking the top three spots due to their NIH funding of $306m, $262m and $240m respectively. Other data points such as graduation rates and overall growth were also considered in making a comprehensive analysis of each city's life sciences industry. The list also includes Phoenix, Tampa, Richmond, Albuquerque, Kansas City and Knoxville. The study provides an overview of pharma and biotech research talent across several metrics including salary information for different positions within these industries. It analyzed data from universities or research institutions based on NIH funding that they received. Columbus is home to renowned research institutions like the University of Cincinnati with above-average concentrations of epidemiologists while Cincinnati has one of the largest NIH funding recipients last year - Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. Meanwhile Indiana University and Purdue University at Indianapolis were two largest recipients in terms of NIH funding last year according to CBRE with above average concentrations of bioengineering workers among others.
